Build Program   Grades 6 -8

The Learnatory "Build" Program engages students in a wide range of illuminating paths building positive anticipation for high school and beyond.  By delving in to a variety of disciplines, students tackle challenges like designing a playground for special needs children, creating their own Apps, and programming robots to function through the Internet.

Building a strong foundation for college and careers, students also begin to identify their own special interests and the fields that appeal to them most.  Their academic skills are automatically reinforced as they explore mysteries in the S.T.E.A.M. world, deduce facts, become more confident about their own capabilities and potentials.

The "Build" program affords your child the opportunity to take risks testing their own theories while applying the Engineering Design Process and the Action Research Models to their own inquiry-based projects.  The conclusions are their own and the apply the lessons learned to create practical, meaningful projects that surpass even their own expectations.

Program Goals

  • Stimulate an affinity for exploration, discovery, and innovation
  • Understand and apply the Engineering Design Process and Action Research Model

  • Motivate parents to encourage their children to become engaged in the S.T.E.A.M. fields
  • Create a pipeline of students to participate in S.T.E.A.M. "Empower" Programs

Learning Path for the Build Program  

The Learnatory Discover Program is designed to provide young people with a well-rounded perspective and wide range exposure to S.T.E.A.M.   Your child may register for the complete package of four classes or take classes separately. Courses may be taken in any order.

SCRATCH Coding and XBox Game Creation  
Understand how computers think through coding projects in Scratch along with games and activities using advanced SCRATCH skills.   Then, why play someone else’s game when you can make your own? Building upon the skills developed in SCRATCH, students will continue to use block programming to build an actual game for the XBox!   They will create superior and impressive games while continuing to coding skills.   This course provides with everything needed to create awesome multi-level arcade or platform video games similar to Space Invaders™ or Super Mario™!

Mobile App Development   
Your child will get a solid introduction to real-world software development. Using a graphical interface, very similar to SCRATCH, this software development experience will use visual objects to create an application that can run on Android devices.  Creating their very own App may allow them to develop ways to simplify their own life!  And, who knows, maybe the lives of millions of others!

Flight, Aviation, and Virtual Reality 
This exciting, hands-on class takes off with a look at  the principles of flight, aerodynamics, and simple Newtonian physics by identifying the principles in action in the real world.  Students learn about lift, gravity, mass/weight, speed/velocity, acceleration, and thrust & drag as they build and fly their own airplanes both virtually and as models.  They then create their own virtual realities and build their own VR gear to enjoy their own new worlds!

Amazing Robotics!  
Perfect for stimulating interest and a deeper understanding of science and technology, students apply the Engineering Design Process principles as they learn concepts to design, create, and program a robot.   They are exposed to the basics of motors, gears, sensors, batteries, programming and assembly of mechanical/electrical devices.  Projects include building their own robots with a team and/or a model robot of their own.
