Discover Program for Certificates of Excellence    Grades 3 - 5

The Learnatory Explore Program gives students in 3rd thru 5th grades greater insights into S.T.E.A.M.

and the role these fields play in their lives.  Through exciting project-based learning experiences,

students work with engaging instructors and working professionals in the S.T.E.A.M fields. 

By exploring real-world problems, they gain insights for creative solutions that having meaning and

application to the world in which they live.  Our goal is to give young people the confidence to discover

the wonders of S.T.E.A.M. and develop strong foundations for high achievement.    

Learning coding through their creation of video games and animations opens minds to languages of the

21st century.   Having fun creating Apps transplants critical thinking and problem-solving with practical

application. Building robots and learning through Virtual Reality offers world-class learning about things,

people, and places they might otherwise never experience.

Program Goals

  • Understand and apply the Engineering Design Process and Action Research Model
  • Develop skills in how to learn, study, and think critically

  • Motivate parents to encourage their children to become engaged in the S.T.E.A.M. fields
  • Create a pipeline of students to participate in S.T.E.A.M. "Empower" Programs

Learning Path for the "Discover" Program*

The Learnatory Discover Program is designed to provide young people with a well-rounded perspective and wide range exposure to S.T.E.A.M.   Your child may register for the complete package of four classes or take classes separately.  Each class is 8 weeks.  Courses may be taken in any order.

SCRATCH Coding and XBox Game Creation
Understand how computers think through coding projects in Scratch along with games and activities using advanced SCRATCH skills.   Then, why play someone else’s game when you can make your own? Building upon the skills developed in SCRATCH, students will continue to use block programming to build an actual game for the XBox!   They will create superior and impressive games while continuing to coding skills.   This course provides with everything needed to create awesome multi-level arcade or platform video games similar to Space Invaders™ or Super Mario™!

Mobile App Development 

Your child will get a solid introduction to real-world software development. Using a graphical interface, very similar to SCRATCH, this software development experience will use visual objects to create an application that can run on Android devices.  Creating their very own App may allow them to develop ways to simplify their own life!  And, who knows, maybe the lives of millions of others!

No Bones About It 

Apply the engineering design process to the fields of biology or medicine to solve healthcare problems, and you’re thinking like a biomedical engineer. The storybook "Erik’s Unexpected Twist" provides a framework for biomedical engineering in this unit with the exciting story of a rescue mission where engineering saves the day for a boy with an injured knee. Students explore the variations in human feet and use the information to make recommendations about sneaker design. They also measure the range of motion in knees as they investigate how a knee joint works. After evaluating the properties of different building materials, they design a knee brace that will restore the range of motion to a model of an injured knee. 

Amazing Robotics!

Perfect for stimulating interest and a deeper understanding of science and technology, students apply the Engineering Design Process principles as they learn concepts to design, create, and program a robot.   They are exposed to the basics of motors, gears, sensors, batteries, programming and assembly of mechanical/electrical devices.  Projects include building their own robots with a team and/or a model robot of their own.

*Course selections subject to change and every course is not offered every Session.  Course length may be extended in some cases.
